We are Here to Serve The Purposes of God

The other day I was watching a message on You-Tube and the speaker made the statement, “We are here to serve the purposes of God”.   For some reason, these words came alive to me.  It’s not that I didn’t know this truth, but I believe, like so many others, we sometimes forget and need to be reminded.

If we are honest, we spend the majority of our time trying to figure out:

  • What will make ME happy?
  • What is best for ME?
  • How can I accomplish MY desires?
  • How can MY will be done?

Keywords “ME, MY & I ”

If we are honest, we would admit that very little of our time is spend on determining the purposes and/or fulfilling the purposes of God.

  • What will make GOD happy?
  • How can I best serve HIM?
  • How can I accomplish HIS desires?
  • How can HIS will be done in and through my life?

Ephesians 2:10 tells us: For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Colossians 1:16 tells us: For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him.

We were created for His purposes, to do the good works that He prepared for us in advance to do.

Jesus, time and time again stated, I come to do My Father’s will …

  • That was the position of His heart
  • That was the purpose of His actions

At no time did He lose sight or lose focus of those goals.

  • He came to represent His Father to the world
  • He came to bring salvation to the world
  • Everything that He did was to that end.

He was not deterred by life’s situations or circumstances.  No matter what situation He found Himself in, He still pressed forward to serve the purpose of God and rightly represent Him to the world

  • When tempted by the devil, He still pressed forward to serve the purpose of God and rightly represent Him to the world
  • When others tried to take His life, He still pressed forward to serve the purpose of God and rightly represent Him to the world
  • When all manner of evil was spoken against Him, He still pressed forward to serve the purpose of God and rightly represent Him to the world
  • In betrayal by those He loved, He still pressed forward to serve the purpose of God and rightly represent Him to the world
  • As He was being lead to death, He still pressed forward to serve the purpose of God and rightly represent Him to the world
  • As He hung upon the cross, it wasn’t about Himself, it was about pressing forward to serve the purpose of God and rightly represent Him to the world

Hebrews 12:2 (Amplified Version) gives us these instructions: [looking away from all that will distract us and] focusing our eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of Faith, who for the joy [of accomplishing the goal] set before Him endured the cross, disregarding the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God

Look to Him, fix our eyes upon Him … He is our example.

Life’s situations do not negate God’s purpose for us.

We must settle in our hearts that no matter what is going on in life, we are here to:

  • Serve the purposes of God and
  • Rightly represent Him to the world
  • Don’t let CULTURE deter you
  • Don’t let FAMILY deter you
  • Don’t let FRIENDS deter you
  • Don’t let JOB SITUATIONS deter you
  • Don’t let FINANCES deter you
  • Don’t let HEALTH deter you
  • Don’t let the devil deter you

Fix your eyes upon Him and continue to press toward the goal, for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
